How to Really Follow Through with New Year Resolutions

How to Really Follow Through with New Year Resolutions

It's easy to jump into January with full gusto for achieving your New Year resolutions, but as the months wear on, goals often fall wayside until you find yourself making the same promises the following year.

Don't fall down that trap. Follow these simple 5 steps to ticking your boxes off in 2016 with a smile on your face.

1. Create small and measurable goals - Was your resolution to "lose weight" (the most common of them all)? Or did you decide you wanted to quit your job and run your own business? Both are wonderful goals but either too general or too intimidating by themselves. Breaking your resolutions down into specific and attainable parts will help keep you focused, on track and motivated. For example, if you want to lose weight, you can make it more specific by having a target in mind, such as fitting into your old jeans, and then break it down into smaller parts that will help you achieve the overall outcome, such as cutting out processed foods and moving your body for 30 minutes every day. If you want to start your own business, create smaller tasks and begin working on these to bring the process about, to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

2. Write it down - Putting pen to paper is a great way to map out your resolutions. Often the act of writing down what you want to achieve is the first step in itself, like a promise to yourself. Display reminders and encouragement in places that you know will support you. Write your goals as affirmations, such as "I am a healthy weight and happy", "I have abundance in my life" or "I am successful in my own business." Whatever it may be, write it down.

3. Practice the law of attraction - The law of attraction states that what you put out into the world must come back to you. This year, don't base your happiness on something you will only have "when" you fulfil your resolutions. Instead, choose to be happy right now. Let yourself feel the joy you will have when you reach a healthy weight or when your own business takes off and you have the freedom to work for yourself. Imagine it and let yourself feel as if you have already received it in your life. According to best selling author of The Secret and The Power, Rhonda Bryne, by doing this you are attracting the very thing you desire to you, like a magnet. It's amazing the power of changing your thoughts and feelings can actually have on your entire life.

4. Keep yourself accountable - Tell your loved ones about your resolutions for 2016. Ask them to support you and help keep you on track. Sometimes it's easy to lose sight of our true dreams and goals when the rush of everyday life takes over. Having a friend, family member or partner there to remind you and cheer you on can be just the support you need to keep aiming at that target!
